Hello Operator?

Im working on a short animated film at the moment.
Real busy and having a lot of fun researching and designing a 1929 New York setting.
A concept for now. I may start a new blog/website just for development of the film as its
a pretty big project!

Les Voiture

I have always had a fascination with cars.
The noise, the look, the speed, yet I have never taken a driving test.

Little me

When I was a boy, I would go to the attic of our house (which was converted to a bedroom/study) and peer out over the bank that was opposite my house.
Just over the bank was a rail track and station, beyond that, I didn't know.
I just remember imagining just what was beyond.

Ellie Girl Sketch

I was going for a character who wanted to be alone.
It could also be seen as her just about to start singing!

Digging up the past

I drew and painted this a while ago as a concept for film I had thought of.
Its part of a panning shot and the characters are animated but not to the finish of this piece.
The way its lit was inspired by the 2008 Beijing Olympics Monkey: Journey to the west.
I love light, in this scene it should be rich with volumetric light from the windows and diffused glow on the characters.
I just love the way richness of depth the Gorillaz animation use.
One of the reasons I really got into animation was because of these guys!

BG 01

Wow, its been too long posting some art on this after all that fan boy stuff (which I am totally not by the way ;) )

I though that for the current film i'm working on, that I'd try a new approach to my usual design.
Its a different process and a a totally interesting way of looking at form and shape.

Annecy 2010

Well, its been quite a week at Annecy 2010.
Laughs, films, film makers, swans, beer, hay fever, no sleep, paper aeroplanes, mountains, the lake, pedalos and Ice cream and what a beautiful town.
Some memorable moments:

I look so scared as I met Ron Clements and John Musker but its a mixture of about 3.5 hours sleep and hay fever!

Meeting Mr. Bill Plympton (a lot taller than I thought)

Just having a beer at café des art when we noticed Mr. David Silverman and friends playing some Jazz. He recommends Preservation Hall New Orleans by the way!

Woody and the gang were advertising Toy Story 3, nice guy.

World premier of Day and Night. Such a beautiful little film and great to see some traditional animation from the Pixar guys to!

David Silverman, Peter Lord and 5 of the 7 NFTS Class of 2010 students.

Next time, I hope to have a film there, some anti histamines and some more sleep. Good night!

Baby Fenton

First time using Cell Action and wanted to really use the software for some lip syncing.
Also kind of always wanted to animate the 'robot' dance :)

Mmmmmm, coffee

Playing with light and shapes here.
Quite pleased with the end result, I'd like to try my hand at character design more I think.

Statue of frustration

Don't you hate it when you draw or even animate something in photoshop and accidentally delete the file?
Well that happened to this one but luckily I only lost about 3 hours of work on it.
I preferred the accidentaly deleted version........... but then of course I would say that, wouldn't I.

Body sketch

Drew this a couple of months ago but I like it so much so Il put it up.
Having watched there will be blood for the first time I loved it and so started drawing Daniel Day Lewis and just developed it into a whole nude body.

Sandimation number one

So here's the first of three animations I made using Sand.

Jonathan the Blue Cowboy

Started off as cowboy but turned into gangster.
Hmmm...kind of looks like Quentin Tarantino no?

Guns n Ammo

Ever since I was small, I always found military things exciting.
In school I would constantly draw tanks and helicopters in my study books instead of using them for their actual purpose.

Nothing has changed, even at Masters level!

Monday, 22 February 2010

I thought its been a while since I last drew.
So I watched some Ballet and started to draw.

First blog!

My first blog EEEK!

Week started Monday 15/02/10 with Caroline Leaf, getting our hands dirty with sand!
To be honest, I didn't quite know what to expect but it is actually really enjoyable and so far have had some pretty good results.
I admire what Caroline does with her techniques, the use of shapes, characters and spacial awareness is just fantastic.
I must encourage you out there to watch these films (if you haven't done so already)
: The Owl Who Married a Goose (1974) The Street (1976) Two Sisters (1990)

Animations made this week to follow.....
